Marine Sound Insulation Pro 53 mm is a foil-faced barrier bonded foam developed to reduce noise from engine rooms and enclosed technical compartments on boats and yachts. Its 53 mm high-density bonded foam and heavy-layer sound barrier work together to absorb engine noise and limit its transfer into living areas. The 100x100 cm panel size allows large bulkhead surfaces to be covered quickly with fewer pieces.

This product is the marine model of the Dekor Akustik barrier bonded foam range. It is designed for boat owners and boat builders who want to improve onboard comfort and create a quieter environment in cabins and saloons.

Why Does Noise Matter on Boats?

On boats and yachts, the engine room is usually located very close to the living areas. High noise levels from engines, generators and pumps, together with vibration transmitted through the hull, can lead to fatigue, communication difficulties and reduced comfort on long passages. With effective marine sound insulation:

  • Engine noise in cabins and saloons is noticeably reduced.
  • Conversation and resting comfort improve while under way.
  • Generator noise is less noticeable during overnight stays.
  • Bulkhead vibration is reduced, helping to control resonance and humming sounds.

Product Structure

Barrier Bonded Foam Core

The high-density bonded foam layer absorbs sound energy inside the engine room and reduces reflections. The heavy-layer sound barrier integrated into the foam limits the transfer of sound through bulkheads and ceilings into the living areas.

Foil-Faced Surface

One side of the product is faced with a special foil. The foil surface helps protect the foam from external influences, reduces the build-up of dust and dirt, and gives the engine room a tidy, professional appearance.

Optional Self-Adhesive Backing

The product can be supplied with a self-adhesive backing on request. This option speeds up installation in narrow and hard-to-reach engine compartments.

Applications

  • Boat and yacht engine rooms: Applied to the ceiling and side walls of the engine compartment to reduce engine noise reaching the living areas.
  • Generator compartments: Helps control generator noise at anchor or in the marina.
  • Cabin and saloon bulkheads: Used as an additional insulation layer on cabin walls adjacent to the engine room.
  • Engine hatches and covers: Limits sound and vibration transfer through the inner surfaces of engine access hatches.
  • Technical lockers: Improves acoustics in enclosed compartments housing pumps, compressors and similar equipment.

Installation Guide

  1. Surface preparation: The surface must be completely free of oil, fuel residue, salt and moisture, and must be dry.
  2. Template and cutting: As engine room surfaces are often irregular, prepare a cardboard template and cut the product to size with a utility knife.
  3. Positioning: Install with the foil side facing into the engine room and the barrier side against the bulkhead surface.
  4. Fixing: For the self-adhesive version, remove the release liner and press into place; for the standard version, use a suitable adhesive. Additional mechanical fixing is recommended on ceilings and vertical surfaces to withstand vibration.
  5. Joints: Leave no gaps between panels and seal the joints with foil tape.
  6. Safety clearance: The product must not come into contact with exhaust manifolds, turbochargers, exhaust lines or other hot surfaces, and must not be used in lower areas where it may be in constant contact with bilge water or fuel.

Advantages of the Pro 53 mm Model

  • Strong noise control: The 53 mm thickness performs effectively against low- and mid-frequency noise such as engine sound.
  • Large panel size: 100x100 cm panels allow large surfaces to be covered with fewer joints.
  • Clean appearance: The black colour and foil surface give the engine room a tidy, professional look.
  • Vibration damping: The heavy barrier layer reduces bulkhead vibration.
  • Easy installation: The optional self-adhesive backing allows fast fitting in tight compartments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which boats can marine sound insulation be used on?

The product can be used in the engine rooms and technical compartments of privately used motor yachts, gulets, sailing yachts and speedboats. On commercial and classed vessels, compliance of insulation materials with the applicable maritime regulations and classification society requirements must be checked separately.

Which way should the foil side face?

The foil side should face into the engine room, towards the noise source, with the barrier side against the bulkhead surface.

Can the product come into contact with hot surfaces?

No. The product is fire Class E; it must not touch exhaust manifolds, exhaust lines, turbochargers or similar hot surfaces, and must be installed with sufficient safety clearance from such equipment.

How many panels do I need for an engine room?

Each panel covers 1 m². Calculate the total area of the engine room ceiling and side surfaces, and add an extra 10–15% to allow for cutting waste on irregular surfaces. The minimum order quantity is 10 pieces.

Are volume prices available for boat builders?

Boat builders, shipyards and high-volume projects can contact us for a custom quotation. To explore our other products, visit our acoustic foams and sound insulation materials categories.
